Instructor Training Scheme: A pathway into employment

We’re reflecting on the fantastic work of our outdoor employment programme, and how it continues to support young people across the city into employment.

The Instructor Training Scheme (ITS) is an entirely free outdoor employment programme that trains young people aged 16 – 24, who lack direction to become an outdoor activity instructor in a variety of outdoor activities including Kayaking, Canoeing, Climbing and High Ropes.

ITS offers young people the chance to develop new skills, gain nationally recognised qualifications, and build a positive future into employment as an outdoor instructor, with local partner outdoor centres

Around 86% of young people aged 16 – 24 had a positive outcome from engaging with our Instructor Training Scheme during 2018-19.

Anthony 22 said,

“Since I’ve done it, it’s changed my life and it has opened my horizons for work opportunities.”

Hear from some of the trainees about how the programme has impacted them.
