Supporting young people to access employment

Our Outdoor Employment Programme is continuing to support trainees online, supporting them to access employment.

The Outdoor Employment Programme is an entirely free programme that trains young people aged 16 – 25, who lack direction to become an outdoor activity instructor in a variety of outdoor activities including Kayaking, Canoeing, Climbing and High Ropes.

The scheme offers young people the chance to develop new skills, gain nationally recognised qualifications, and build a positive future into employment as an outdoor instructor, with local partner outdoor centres

Around 88% of young people aged 16 – 25 had a positive outcome from engaging with our Instructor Training Scheme during 2019 – 20.

Our online workshops are being tailored to our trainees development needs, from bush craft skills, to navigation and expedition planning.

Key partnerships with local Bristol businesses are also continuing, with a consultation taking place with the SS Great Britain last week. Six trainees from our programme took part in the consultation to discuss an exciting new project – it is great to see the planning stage of new projects valuing the voice and ideas of young people.
